An appreciative crowd of 11,262 welcomed the Tennessee
Lady Vols home for a contest with their in-state rival
Vanderbilt. On their way to a 78-52 victory, the Lady
Vols employed a devastating woman-to-woman defense to
suffocate the Vanderbilt offense. In the first half,
the score was 9-6 at the first timeout. The scores at
the next four timeouts were as follows (UT leading):
17-9, 26-11, 34-13, 42-13. At this last timeout a
technical on Vandy was apparently whistled as Kara
Lawson was ushered to the foul line all alone where
she hit 2 FTs to make it 44-13. [I notice the box score
says no technicals, so I don't know what happened if
that is correct.] The Commodores won the last two
minutes of the half, 6-3, to make the halftime score 47-19.
Aside from the defense and its 7 steals, the first
half story was Kara Lawson, as she torched the nets
for 19 points, including 4-4 from three-land.
Catchings had 9 points and April McDivitt made the
most of her limited first half minutes to score 8.
Tennessee shot 62% for the half to Vandy's 34%. UT had
only 6 turnovers to Vanderbilt's 15.
The second half began with Chantelle Anderson hooping
a couple before the LVs could score, but then UT began
to pull away some more. The biggest lead I remember
was 34 at 63-29. About 7 minutes into the half,
Summitt pulled Catchings and began trying
combinations. Sarah Edwards and Amanda Canon checked
in with three minutes left, and the Commodores cut the
margin to the final score of 78-52. Anderson led Vandy
with 17 points, 11 in the second half. She's bigger
than Snow and should be a force in the conference
before she's through, but she doesn't have Snow's
offensive arsenal at her command at this point. Ashley
Smith is a quality point guard, but at 5-4 (?) she had
a rough night with Ace Clement and other taller guards
guarding her. Still, she managed 6 assists before it
was all over. Lawson ended up with 23 points,
Catchings 11, and Snow 12. Tennessee took care of the
ball well for the second straight game, making only 13
turnovers. UT outrebounded VU by 39-29.

Wow!! What a game. Mississippi State tied the score early at 8-8, then took
the lead and never lost it until Catchings penetrated the lane, drawing the
D, and kicked it back out to Lawson for a 3 with 1.6 seconds left in the
game. The Lady Bulldogs hit lights out from beyond the arc most of the game
to hold the LVs at bay whenever they got close, but every time it looked
like Tennessee's back was broken, they sucked it up and came back. Lawson
was fouled on MSU's final inbounds play and hit the two FTs to make the
final score 79-75. "We had plenty of opportunities to fold. We didn't,"
coach Summitt said afterwards.
LaToya Thomas is definitely a force in the post, scoring 20, but I didn't
see any of the silk'n'glide and hang time that I associate with Holdsclaw.
