An enthusiastic crowd of 9,355 ventured out on a Monday night to
see the Lady Vols perform and went home happy. Tennessee came out firing
and let the crowd sit down quickly on a turn around jumper by Michelle Snow.
This was followed in rapid succession by 3-pointers by Kara Lawson, Tamika
Catchings, and "Boo" Randall, and Old Dominion called timeout, trailing
11-4. The teams played 2 more minutes and the score went to 17-8 on buckets
in the paint by Snow, Randall, and Catchings. That was the game in a
nutshell. The LVs hit 8 of 11 3-point shots and went into the locker room
at halftime leading 63-25. ODU made some pretty plays of their own--when
they could--shooting 48% for the half but getting few rebounds. UT had a
22-5 rebound edge at the half, shot 57% themselves, and led in assists 15-2.
The second half started sloppily, then Tennessee went to a full court press
and ran out to a 73-27 advantage in the first 3 minutes. With 9:27 left,
Summitt went to her bench for good with the LVs ahead 93-33. UT broke the
100 mark with 6:50 left on a Pillow free throw. Kyra Elzy put back her
missed second shot to make it 102-35. ODU then ran off eleven straight
points as UT suddenly couldn't hold on to the ball. With four minutes
left, the bench was cleared and Amanda Canon and Sarah Edwards saw
something they rarely see--playing time. The final score was 113-55.
Natalie Diaz (14 pts.), Lucienne Bethieu (18), and Hamchetou Maiga (15)
looked good at times but pretty much had to create shots for themselves.
UT was led by Randall's 21 and Catchings' 19. "Ace" Clement had 9 assists
and could easily have had more if it hadn't been for the recipients of
her passes missing layups. The LVs won the battle of the boards 51-26 and
shot 57.7% for the game.

return
A loud and enthusiastic crowd of 20,789, including a couple hundred
Connecticut travelers, was treated to an exciting and tense contest in
Knoxville today. When all was said and done, it was the visiting Connecticut
Huskies cheering victoriously and taking home a hard-earned 74-67 win. What
was the difference maker? Several things come to mind. First of all, Sue Bird
was everywhere and could hardly miss on the way to 25 points. Secondly,
Tennessee couldn't hit a free throw if their lives depended on it, missing at
least 10 in the first half alone. And finally, although UConn had 23
turnovers to UT's 19, UConn scored 21 points off turnovers, while the LVs
scored only 13 off turnovers.
The first half was fairly even, but UConn led most of the way. Still,
Tennessee stayed right with them. With 3:27 left in the half, the score was
34-33 Connecticut. By halftime their lead had ballooned to 43-37. UT missed
6 free throws in that span. The Huskies put on a quick 7-0 run to start the
second half, and it was an uphill battle for the Lady Vols the rest of the
way. Tennessee managed only 7 points in the first 8:21 of the half as UConn
built the lead to 55-44. UT fought back behind the loud urging of some 20,000
fans, most of them on their feet, but the closest Tennessee got was 63-60
with 2:57 left. It was at that point that Paige Sauer fouled out, and Snow
went to the line for two shots. Unfortunately, Snow missed both, and then
the crowd was informed that she had been awarded a technical for spiking the
ball in celebration after Sauer fouled her. So the teams went to the other
end where Bird hit one of two shots to make it 64-60, and the Huskies got
the ball. That was all she wrote, as Tennessee never got that close again.
All in all, it was a fun game to watch. The Lady Vols get a chance to return
the favor in Storrs on February 2.

return
A laid-back crowd of 9,907 watched a laid-back gang of women in orange
spot the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks a 39-26 halftime lead tonight in
Knoxville. The real Lady Vols showed up just as the second half was
beginning, inspired the crowd to begin roaring, and ran out to a 79-69
victory. The sluggish Tennessee team shot a meager 27% in the first half,
while the Lady 'Backs shot something like 60% (sorry, I forgot to jot
down their exact numbers). UT showed no transition offense to speak of,
and the half court game was stagnant. They got some good looks and led in
rebounding 22-14, but couldn't put the ball in the hole. They did manage
3-5 from the free throw line. Coach Summitt tried multiple lineup
variations trying to find a spark--all to no avail.
In the second half, the LVs came out in their full court press and forced
Arkansas into turnovers on their first three possessions. After the game,
the radio announcer kept saying UT had a 23-0 run to start the half, but
my notes show that the LVs took their first lead of the second half at the
13:38 mark, 46-45. That's a 20-6 run. At 12:51 it was 49-45 and Gary Blair
was standing at midcourt getting himself a technical--it didn't help. Blair
was apparently upset that Amy Wright got caught up in a traffic jam
involving herself, another Lady 'Back, Catchings, and Clement. Wright
tripped over her own feet and lost the ball to Catchings who streaked
downcourt for a layup. Tennessee just expanded the lead from there to
56-45, and that was the ballgame. Arkansas got back within eight at one
point, but never closer.
When UT finally got their shooting untracked--so to speak, they shot 36.5%
for the game--it was Lawson and Snow who did the damage. Lawson ended with
25 points and Snow 24. Snow was 10-13 from the free throw line. Lawson and
Randall each had 10 rebounds, and Catchings kicked in 13 points. Wendy
Willits was high for the 54% shooting Lady 'Backs with 16, hitting 4 threes.
Karyn Karlin did not start, as Blair shook up his lineup, but she came off
the bench to score 14. Tennessee won the rebounding battle 52-22, but had 25
turnovers to Arkansas' 27. It wasn't a great game, but it was fun once the
locals got into it in the second half.

As they built a 40-24 halftime lead, the Tennessee Lady Vols showed
flashes of their early season dominance today against Kentucky. The
second half was a different story, however, and the squad held on to
come away with a 71-65 SEC road victory. Coach Summitt suggested that
Kentucky switching to a zone defense led to the LVs standing too much
as their 53% first half shooting dipped to 35% in the second stanza. The
Wildcats, for their part, gradually reduced the halftime deficit and rode
an Erica Jackson 11-point spurt in the last four minutes to threaten the
upset. Tennessee remained composed, though, and hit their free throws to
preserve the victory.
The first five minutes of the game ended in an 8-8 tie, but after a
timeout, UT rode some spirited defense and board work by Kyra Elzy to
a 15-8, then a 21-10 advantage. With less than six minutes left, the
lead had reached 35-15, which was as large as it would get. Kentucky
was in a zone by that time and nibbled the lead down to 40-24 by the
half. Snow scored 10 in the first half. She was followed closely by
Randall's 9 and Lawson's 8. Tiffany Wait and Laura Meadows each had 6
for Kentucky. UT led the board battle 18-11, but both team's were a little
lax in ballhandling as the Cats had 17 turnovers to the LVs 11.
Tennessee scored the first bucket of the second half, but Kentucky netted
the next six to knock the margin down to 12, 42-30. After a Catchings three,
UT was back up 49-34, but then they went cold. When the Wildcats converted
two free throws after Catchings' 3rd foul (which looked phantom to me), the
difference was down to single digits, 51-43. Moments later, with about nine
minutes left, Catchings was whistled for her 4th foul (even more phantom
than the 3rd) and left the game for four minutes. Kentucky could not take
advantage, though, and UT came down for a Snow score to make it 53-43.
Again, the Cats failed to score, but Randall turned the ball over and
Kentucky did score, 53-45. Snow committed a turnover, but UT held on "D"
and came back to score on a Snow rebound, 55-45. Kentucky managed to get
to the foul line on their next two possessions, converting 4 free throws
to make it 55-49. The Cats put on a press then. Lawson dribbled through
the press, nearly losing the ball three times but retained control until
she made her way down the lane for a layup, 57-49. Kentucky couldn't score
and Tennessee came down to get another Snow bucket, 59-49. There was 3:56
remaining as timeout was called, but Kentucky was not quitting. Lawson got
two more free throws for UT, 61-49, but then Erica Jackson decided to score
the first of her game total of 11 points in the next couple of minutes,
61-51. The Cats' press doubled Lawson and got a steal--Jackson scored, 61-53.
Lawson's foot slipped and hit the sideline for another turnover, and Jackson
hit a three, 61-56. Clement got stripped of the ball, but Kentucky couldn't
capitalize as Clement rebounded their miss and fed a streaking Randall who
scored on a layup, 63-56. Jackson then drove the right side and beat Lawson
to score two more, 63-58. UT couldn't convert on its next possession, and
Snow fouled Jackson on the rebound. She stepped to the line to knock down
two more--her 10th and 11th points in a row--to make the score 63-60. On the
next possession, Jackson picked up her fifth foul with 49.3 seconds left,
ending her one-woman show, and Clement made the two free throws to widen the
margin to 65-60. Jackson's replacement, Rita Adams, then drove the length of
the floor to make a layup, 65-62. Randall was fouled and made one, 66-62.
Natalie Martinez, in the game to shoot the bomb because Wait was sidelined
by back spasms, threw up a 27-footer that missed. Lawson converted two free
throws, 67-62. Martinez, then got open in the corner and buried a three,
67-65. Meadows fouled Catching to foul out, and Catch converted both, 69-65.
With 5 seconds left, Martinez couldn't handle a pass in her hurry to get set
for the shot, and the ball dribbled out of bounds. UT added two more free
throws by Randall, then, to make the final score 71-65, for a hard-earned
SEC road victory.
Michelle Snow had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kara Lawson and Semeka
Randall scored 15 points apiece for the Lady Vols (14-3/4-1). Catchings had
six boards, three steals, and 11 points. LaTonya McDole netted 18 points,
dished seven assists, and nabbed five steals for Kentucky (11-7/3-3). Erica
Jackson scored 11 points before fouling out and Laura Meadows added 10. The
Wildcats committed 26 turnovers to Tennessee's 25. I don't know what you
have to do to get an assist in Lexington. Tennessee had 6 and Kentucky had
8 for the game. It looked like there should have been more awarded than that,
to me. Tennessee outrebounded the Cats, 35-28.

return
A small, relatively quiet Super Bowl Sunday crowd of 8,545 gathered at
Thompson-Boling Arena today to witness the Lady Vols' rematch with
Kentucky. The game started slowly and at the first timeout UT led by
only 6-4. As the game progressed, both teams were playing solid defense,
but Tennessee's was just a bit better as the Wildcats inexplicably were
letting Kara Lawson get open for three-point shots. Kara was on. She hit
5-6 3s (by my count) on the way to scoring 19 first half points. Behind
Lawson and a stifling defense keyed by Ace Clement's work on Kentucky's
point, Erica Jackson, UT gradually built their lead, peaking out at the
halftime score of 47-27. Catchings contributed 9 first half points, while
Randall and Snow had 6 each and Gwen Jackson had 5. LaTonya McDole led
the Cats with 10. The LVs had a 19-16 edge on the boards, but a telling
stat was UT's 10 assists to only 2 by UK.
The second half got off to a sloppy start and UT missed some easy inside
shots. Tennessee finally got on the board with another Lawson 3, which
gave her her game-high total of 22. Unlike the last meeting with Kentucky,
Tennessee managed to increase their lead, despite shooting only 29% in
the second half. Rebounding was the big difference as the LVs ended up
with a huge 54-32 board advantage. The final score was 77-48 in favor
of Tennessee.
