A small, but boisterous crowd of 7,572 had a great time at
Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville this afternoon. The only ones who
enjoyed it more were the Lady Vol players, who upset the U.S. National Team
today, 65-64.
The game got off to a slow start as the U.S. players were called for
numerous traveling violations and the LVs were just trying to get off a
shot. The LVs scored their first bucket at 15:20 of the half, a 3-pointer
from the top of the key by Kara Lawson, but the U.S. had 5 points already
by then. Tennessee took the lead at 9-8 with 12:37 left and the score
see-sawed from there until the U.S. got on a run to go ahead 25-21 with
2:51 left. The LVs stepped up their defense and pulled away a bit after
that to go into the locker room at the half leading 32-27. Key plays in the
LVs spurt were Clement's drive up the left side of the lane for a layup and
another Lawson 3-pointer. Besides leading on the scoreboard, Tennessee had
9 steals to the U.S. team's 6. The pros led in blocks, 6-0; rebounds,
17-15; and assists, 8-6. For UT, Catchings and Lawson had 6 points, Clement
5, and Snow, Jackson, and Randall had 4 each. McCray led the U.S. with 8,
Griffith 6, Leslie 4, and Bolton-Holifield 3.
The second half began with UT forcing the U.S. into turnovers on their
first 2 possessions, but the LVs couldn't capitalize. At 17:01, Clement
picked up her 4th foul and went to the bench. UT used a point by committee
for a while, with Lawson, Randall, and Catchings sharing the load. The U.S.
gradually caught up and put a little space between the teams with a
Bolton-H. 3-pointer at 11:15 that made the score 46-42, U.S. Clement came
back into the game at that point and played most of the rest of the game
without fouling out. The U.S. started pulling away and after a Staley 3 at
8:31, they led 53-43. Then something odd happened.
Yolanda Griffith was called for a foul and the ref deemed her objection to
be too vocal and too animated and called a technical. Kara Lawson then
stepped to the line and hit 3-4 free throws, and UT got the ball back.
Catchings took the opportunity to work herself loose for a little 12-foot
jumper and the U.S. lead had been cut to 53-48. The pros quickly scored
again, but the LVs tightened up their D and took back the lead at about the
4:00 mark, 56-55. Semeka Randall was instrumental in that run, driving and
looking for her shot. Bolton answered with a 3 to make it 58-56, U.S., but
Clement drove the baseline and scored to knot it at 58. The next couple of
minutes saw the U.S. going over the top to Leslie and scoring at will,
while UT could only manage another Lawson 3 to keep close. Then, Clement
stole an inbounds pass under the basket and scored to make it 64-63, U.S.
The pros came down and again tried to go inside, but Snow intercepted the
pass and the LVs had the ball with :20 left on the clock. The ball was
inbounded to Lawson, who dribbled around out top and to the right where she
saw a lane and drove and scored with a little 4-5 foot bank-shot. UT 65, U.S.
64. The U.S. brought the ball down under tight defensive pressure and could
only manage an off-balance shot by Edwards. The rebound was batted around
and time expired. Pandemonium ensued :-)

A late starting game found 6-7,000 fans willing to witness a rout. Kara
Lawson scored first, hitting a 3. The other 4 starters (Pillow, Clement,
Catchings, Randall) each followed with a bucket, and soon it was 15-2 four
minutes into the game. At the 11:15 mark, it was 30-4 and the LVs never
looked back, breaking a 14-year-old one game scoring record with 133
points, bettering the 130 they put up against Hawaii Pacific in 1985. The
game was so lopsided that the band started chanting, "we want Edwards" and
"we want Canon" with 9:30 minutes left in the game. Pat put them in 5
minutes later.
Pat said she started Pillow because she'd been working so hard that she
deserved a shot. She started Lawson as an experiment, to see how it went,
particularly on the defensive end. She really didn't say whether or not she
considered the experiment a success, but Lawson had a big offensive night.
Tennessee forced 35 turnovers but had 19 themselves. The LVs shot 58% for
the game, hitting an uncharacteristic 8-16 3-pointers. Lawson was 5-7 on 3s
herself. The new TV screens were activated for the first time. They're in 2
opposite corners of the arena, and the picture is much brighter and clearer
than the old screens.
It's hard to evaluate players in a game like this, but there was some nifty
passing by Clement and McDivitt, both of whom were on the floor at the same
time at one point. One memorable play was McDivitt threading a pass to
Randall cutting across the lane, who then dropped it off behind her back
for Elzy to make a layup. Clement was denied some assists by missed shots
or the recipient getting fouled on the shot, too. We got our first extended
look at Tasheika Morris, who seems to have a nice touch and isn't afraid of
shooting 3s. Elzy was hitting the boards hard, and Butts showed that she
needs playing time cuz she can create some havoc quickly.

9-10,000 fans, including a couple hundred from Indiana, saw Tennessee hang
on for a 72-66 victory over Purdue. Coach Summitt was not happy with the
LVs intensity or rebounding, but she'll take win #699. Purdue, of course,
never quits, so there weren't many leaving this one early.
Tennessee ran out to an early 11-5 lead, but after the first timeout, the
Boilers closed the gap and tied it up at 14 by the midpoint mark of the half.
Shortly thereafter, there was a collission between Kara Lawson and Katie
Douglas that left Douglas on the floor for several minutes. She finally rose
and was assisted off favoring her right leg. She was only gone a minute and
a half, as she got her ankle wrapped and returned to the wars.Tennessee pulled
ahead with Ace Clement and April McDivitt on the floor at the same time, a
combination that Summitt went to fairly often. Pat said she was pleased with the
play of her 3 guards--Clement , Lawson, and McDivitt. UT moved out to a 25-16
lead on 5 straight points by Snow. Then Purdue went on a little 5-2 run, but
Clement found Gwen Jackson twice in a row to make it 31-21 with 2 minutes left.
The Boilers hung tough, though, and it was 32-25 at the half. Purdue had a
21-16 board advantage at the half. Douglas, Catchings, Snow, and Lawson all
had 6 points to lead the scoring.
The LVs came out with a 10-2 run to start the 2nd half, a run that was accented
by an authoritative Snow block of a Komara jumper. Purdue then started going to
Camille Cooper, who had all of 2 points at halftime. Cooper was nigh unstoppable,
scoring 7 straight for Purdue in one spell, but the LVs were scoring too and at
the 11:39 mark, it was 48-34, Tennessee, which I think was the biggest lead. Both
teams went cold until the 8 minute mark, each scoring but 2 points in that span.
Then Cooper started hitting again and the LVs were not able to keep her away from
the ball. Suddenly, with 2:49 left, we looked up and the score was 61-55, and we
had a ballgame on our hands. Douglas became a one-woman wrecking crew, scoring 10
of Purdue's last 11 points. She refused to be denied and scored despite the defense.
Too little too late, though, as the LV hit a couple shots and got some free throws
to maintain their lead and finally win, 72-66. Purdue won the rebounding
battle, 41-39 and UT had 12 steals to Purdue's 3.
I was really impressed by Cooper. She played sterling defense, too. At one
time, she deftly reached over Randall's back at just the right time and
blocked her shot that had looked open a second before. Douglas was always
aware of Cooper and got most of her assists to Coop. Komara had a nice game.
After being blocked, she went right back in next time down and finessed the
ball in the hoop around Snow's block attempt.

The Tennessee Lady Vols and the Texas Longhorns got together for a little
pre-New Year party with 12,712 of their admirers tonight. After trophies
were presented to Jody Conradt and Pat Summitt, commemorating their status as
700-win coaches, their young disciples played an exciting game of up-and-down
basketball, with Tennessee claiming the "W," 106-76. The game started at a fast
pace, but the results were slow in coming, and after nearly 5 minutes of play,
the score was knotted at 6. The LVs went inside to Michelle Snow early and often,
but she missed as many as she made. Play resumed with the score staying close
until Semeka Randall hit a three and followed it with a deuce. Then, Kara Lawson
buried a three, and it was suddenly 18-12, Tennessee--timeout Texas. After the
timeout, the LVs put on their pressure defense. Lawson got open for a fraction
of a second and hit a three, then the defense created a loose ball that Lawson
picked up and rifled to Randall underneath for two. In little more than a minute,
the score had become 23-12--timeout Texas. A fruitless timeout it was, as Tennessee
continued the pressure and seemed to score at will, running the transition game
to perfection, scoring off steals, blocks, and rebounds. With 7 minutes left in
the half, it was 36-19, and Tennessee never looked back. At the half the LVs led
49-32. Key first half stats were Texas's rebounding edge of 20-14 (mainly because
TN didn't miss often), and the LVs assist advantage of 15-3 (Texas was getting
their points from individual efforts).
The second half began with Randall stealing the ball and making a layup and was
pretty much more of the same. With 7:18 left in the game, though, everything
stopped for about 15 minutes. Randall and Texas sophomore Rashunda Johnson went
up for a rebound and both came down with it. Neither was inclined to let go, and
they fell to the floor. Unfortunately, Johnson's head hit the floor very hard.
She never appeared to lose consciousness but couldn't get up. After stabilizing
her neck, they hauled her off on a stretcher. Before the game was over, the
announcer reported that she was up and walking, and everyone was relieved to hear
that. I expect she'll have a concussion to deal with in the coming days, though.
The game continued after the delay, and it was run, run, run. Tennessee broke the
hundred mark on a beautiful "Ace" Clement bullet pass to LaShonda Stephens under
the hoop. The final score was 106-76, and Pat complained on the post-game show that
the LVs had given up too many points.
Senior Edwina Brown was the real deal for Texas, scoring 22. She was backed up by
sophomore Asha Hill, who added 20. Both were largely scoring through individual
effort as Texas only had 11 assists for the game--TN had 23. Tennessee eventually
won the board battle, 35-34. Texas had 31 turnovers. Tennessee shot 55% for the game.
6-4 junior Carla Littleton started at center for the Longhorns, but she scored zero
points and fouled out with 12 minutes left. Rashunda Johnson backed her up but was
clearly much more of an offensive threat. She got open time and again and converted
for 12 points, 10 in the second half before she was injured.
For Tennessee, Catchings had 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Randall contributed
21 points on 9-12 shooting and snagged 5 steals. Clement had 6 assists and only 1
turnover, with 2 steals and 4 points. Lawson had 19 points, hitting 3-5 3-pointers,
and Gwen Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her 10 points. All in all, it was
a very enjoyable game to watch with very little standing around by either team. Texas
ought to be in every game in the Big 12, if they take care of the ball a little better.
