Candace Parker scored 26 points, and the No. 3 Lady Vols advanced to the semifinals with a 92-61 win over Florida in their SEC tournament opener. Shannon Bobbitt contributed 22 points, and Alexis Hornbuckle added 16. Tennessee scored 30 fast-break points and 24 off turnovers while shooting 55.4% from the floor (36-for-55). "I think we decided to play with a lot of energy and we played a 40-minute game, didn't we?" Parker asked. "We did," coach Summitt answered affirmitavely. "I'm glad to say that. It makes me happy. . . . I think we're very focused. I think they came in focused, and if today is any indication and we can build on that, then I feel like our basketball team is going to be ready to play."

Once again led by Candace Parker, who scored 25 points, the No. 3 Lady Vols beat No. 21 Vanderbilt, 63-48, to move on to the SEC tournament championship game. Alexis Hornbuckle added 14 points for Tennessee. The Commodores started well and built a 10 point lead. UT answered, though, behind 17 of Parker's points to lead at the half, 37-28. The second half was a defensive struggle between the SEC's top two scoring teams. Tennessee hit only 6 of 27 field goals (22.2%), but the Lady Vols held Vanderbilt to a season-low in total points and its worst 3-point shooting performance of the season (2-of-17). Tennessee was saved by their 12-15 free throw shooting. Nicky Anosike contributed 10 rebounds, and Alberta Auguste had 4 steals. Coach Summitt said, "Obviously second half I thought our defense really stepped up for us. We went with a little bigger, more athletic lineup, which I thought helped us run our five defense, basically our switching, man to man. . . . I thought Nicky Anosike had a tremendous defensive game. Her presence made a big difference in what Vanderbilt was able to see and able to do, so really pleased with our seniors and their play."

With Candace Parker leading the way as usual, the No. 3 Lady Vols won their record 13th Southeastern Conference title by beating No. 7 LSU, 61-55. Every time Tennessee has been a No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament it has won the tournament title. Coach Summitt said, "I know the way they played in this tournament they're a team that's got a chance to win the championship. For a team coming off a championship, they had a hard time being motivated for 40 minutes game in and game out. Unfortunately with the schedule we played, that made it very challenging in a lot of games. But right now, I think they can see a light at the end of the tunnel." Parker scored 28 points and Shannon Bobbitt had 12 for Tennessee. Nicky Anosike had a team-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Vols. Bobbitt made the all-tournament team, and Parker was voted the tournament's most valuable player. LSU coach Van Chancellor remarked, "Here's what I told our players after the game: If Tennessee is good enough to win a national championship, we are, too."

In their first round NCAA Tournament game, the Lady Vols rolled over Oral Roberts, 94-55. Coach Summitt said, "I thought the first half we played like we had a two-week break. We had a very difficult time getting our defensive intensity where we needed it to be. The second half we had a much better effort. We settled down and played better defense. We did a better job in our ball movement and player movement. We were much more aggressive and had some good play off the bench as well. We had much better guard play. It was hard for us at times to get into a rhythm. The game didn’t flow very well at times. It is a win, and when you get into the post season, it is all about survive and advance. We are going to take this one and move forward and play here at Purdue against Purdue. It is going to be a big challenge for us. I hope everybody comes and we have a sell out crowd and a great environment for women’s basketball." Angie Bjorklund led the scoring for UT with 16 points, while Candace Parker tallied 14 and Alexis Hornbuckle and Alberta Auguste each had 13. Hornbuckle dished out 7 assists, and UT’s 45-22 rebounding advantage was led by Alex Fuller with 8.

Pat Summitt's 100th NCAA tournament win was a 78-52 shellacking of Purdue on their home court. Coach Summitt said, "I’m really proud of our basketball team, they came in and committed to playing great defense. I told them after the game that we had 30 minutes of the best defense we played all season. I thought Alexis Hornbuckle really set the tone on how we were going to play on the defensive end. Going inside to Candace Parker was very, very effective for us. She played very aggressively and that established our inside game. It helps to have your guard play and inside action. Vicki Baugh came off the bench and did a super job; she was instrumental in us winning the SEC championship. I’m proud of our team; I’m excited to be moving onto the Sweet 16, that was our goal." Parker was the leading scorer with 24 points, while Hornbuckle put together an impressive stat line of 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and a career-high 8 steals. Frosh Vicki Baugh was UT’s other double-figure scorer, tying her career high with 12 points on 6-7 field goal shooting. Nicky Anosike contributed 10 rebounds.

Candace Parker put her teammates on her back, matching her career best with 34 points and adding 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 3 steals, to lead the Lady Vols to the regional finals for the eighth straight year with a 74-64 win over Notre Dame in the Oklahoma City Regional. "Honestly, in postseason, you've got to come through. That's what great players do," Parker remarked. Shannon Bobbitt contributed 11 points, and Nicky Anosike had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Tennessee. Parker scored 19 of her points in the first-half, but Tennessee was behind at halftime for only the third time this season, 33-31. Coach Summitt said, "Notre Dame played us tough. Obviously from the time we played them before until now, they've improved tremendously, and I was very impressed with what I saw and how tough they played us tonight. We're excited to move on and play in the regional finals. . . . I think we do have great senior leadership. . . . I don't think they went out there really focused with the type of defensive intensity that they should have. I told them, maybe it's because the first time we played Notre Dame we obviously played very, very well and we were up in that game in a big way early. It's a different game. I told them postseason is entirely different, and you have to be aware of that and you have to answer runs. We did a good job of that in the first half but a lot better in the second half, and I give the senior leadership a lot of credit for how we responded at halftime."

Tennessee earned its 18th trip to the Final Four with a hard-fought 53-45 victory over Texas A&M in Oklahoma City. In the process, Candace Parker carried so much of the Lady Vols' offensive load once again that she dislocated her shoulder, not once but twice. Still, she scored 26 of the team's 53 points and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. Alexis Hornbuckle, on the day she was snubbed by AP All-America voters, not even rating an honorable mention, nailed a 24-foot shot with 50 seconds left in the game, giving the Lady Vols a 48-43 advantage from which the Aggies could not recover. Hornbuckle was the other UT player on the All-Tournament team, tallying 14 points and 4 steals on the night. Coach Summitt said, "I thought Alexis and Nicky [Anosike], they were key for us, and we didn't shoot the ball well, and when you struggle offensively, as in our first game here, sometimes it affects your defense. But I'm proud of this team for just the grit and the determination that they had on the defensive end when things were not going well for us offensively, and with Candace obviously not on the court. . . . And certainly down the stretch we did a much better job with controlling the defensive boards; I thought that was key for us. Our basketball team, it's something we talked about, when you're not shooting the ball particularly well you've got to get to the glass, and obviously on the defensive end it's got to be a one and done mentality. I'm really proud that we didn't give up. We fought through and found a way to win." Aggies coach Gary Blair remarked, "Parker is Parker, and we did as well as we could. And I thought she showed a lot of effort playing with that shoulder of hers, because I know she was in a lot of pain, but we were in a lot of pain trying to guard her, too."

"I couldn't make a shot all night, but honestly, that was the only one that mattered," Alexis Hornbuckle said. "I just wanted to stay positive and I crashed the boards and looked up and I said I didn't want to pull this down, with my luck I might as well try to tip it in. And luckily it went in." That tip-in sealed an ugly 47-46 win over SEC rival Louisiana State and sent Tennessee to its 13th appearance in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament against Stanford, an upset winner over top-ranked Connecticut. Coach Summitt said, "I thought our defense, for the most part, had some great stops and stands, and that's what you have to have when you're shooting the ball poorly. And obviously we couldn't figure out how to get to the free throw line. When I look at those two things, just thinking that it was difficult for us. I mean, we were 2 for 7 from the line. Obviously they got to the line a lot more than we did. But I'm just proud of our team for fighting through some adversity, when things wouldn't go our way, for whatever reason." Candace Parker struggled all night after dislocating her shoulder in the last game, shooting only 6-27 from the field but contributing 15 rebounds to go along with her 13 points. LSU coach Van Chancellor remarked, "She ain't never been 6 of 27 in her life. She had a gutty performance tonight." Shannon Bobbitt hit 3-5 from three-point land and scored 11 points and Alberta Auguste helped take up some of the slack with 10 points. All-American Sylvia Fowles scored 24 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead LSU, but she had 7 of the team's 12 missed free throws.

Eight is great! Tennessee wrapped up its 8th National Championship with another sterling team defensive effort, beating the usually offensively potent Stanford Cardinal, 64-48. The Lady Vols actually held their three Elite Eight opponents to fewer than 50 points each. Tennessee's five seniors leave with two rings apiece, and coach Summitt said, "They came out with a great mentality to play hard, especially on the defensive end. On offense, we got more people involved, but it was our defense that got it done. I'm so proud of our seniors, I'm going to miss them." Alberta Auguste put the defensive clamps on Stanford star Candice Wiggins, who was held to 14 points, half of her tournament average. Center Nicky Anosike played at the front of UT's press, giving the Cardinal ballhandlers fits with her size and quickness. She came up with six steals to augment her 12 points and 8 rebounds. Candace Parker scored an efficient 17 points and added 9 boards and 4 steals. Shannon Bobbitt nailed 3 huge three-pointers on the way to 13 points. The frosh got involved, too. Of Vicki Baugh, who left the game with a knee injury, coach Summitt gushed, "She was terrific for us tonight. I mean, she was the player that came off the bench and gave us the biggest spark and was very efficient in what she did. I loved her aggressiveness. And, obviously, if you look at her stat line, she's 3 for 4, 2 for 2 from the line, has 4 rebounds. Eight points. That's a matter of 13 minutes. She made the very best and got the most out of her minutes." Coach Summitt went on to say, "I particularly like the way they committed to each other on the defensive end. I thought our defense, this is one of our best defensive efforts, which gave us a chance, obviously, to beat an outstanding Stanford team. I'm just really proud, and obviously it's a happy but sad time with the seniors leaving. But I will always have tremendous respect for the mark they left on our basketball program." Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer remarked, "They did the things that give us trouble. They have the bodies and the experience to do that. A lot of teams don't."
