Candace Parker recorded her first dunk of the season as the Lady Vols overcame a disappointingly slow start to handle Kentucky, 79-51, in Knoxville. Coach Summitt said, "Obviously it was a game of two different halves. At halftime I said we weren't rebounding at all. In the lockerroom I said we go as Candace Parker and Alexis Hornbuckle go. They have to bring intensity from the opening tip to the last possession. We saw what happens when they do that. They set the tempo and are the example. Nicky Anosike is doing a good job. Shannon Bobbitt picked up the tempo and pushed transition in the second half. I look at our play off of the bench, Alberta Auguste is committed at both ends of the court. We are a better team when she is on the court. We picked it up in the second half." Parker was the leading scoreer with 20 points, while Vicki Baugh came off the bench to pull down 10 rebounds. Kentucky shot 47.4% from the field -- which ties UCLA as the best shooting percentage of any UT opponent this season. On the other hand, the Wildcats had 36 turnovers, effectively negating their good shooting.

At halftime Mississippi State led Tennessee, 40-33, the first time the Lady Vols had trailed at halftime since last season's SEC tournament. Coach Summitt woke the team up in the locker room, though, and the end result was an 87-69 victory. Summitt said, "I thought our defense was water, they went right through it. We've built our program on defensive board play and we just had a lot of breakdowns, and weren't rebounding as well as we needed to. I didn't think our starters were lacking intensity though, we just didn't shoot the ball well, and sometimes that will carry over into your defense. Plus, I just thought Mississippi State played the best I've seen." Coach was particularly unhappy with the play of her bench. "Our bench did not play well tonight, with the exception of Alberta [Auguste]. I think they understand that I was frustrated because I couldn't take our starters out. . . . It's unacceptable from our bench and they're going to have to learn," coach Summitt said. "Obviously I was sending them a pretty strong message. We can't win in the postseason without strong play from our bench." The biggest news after the game, though, was the condition of Candace Parker's knee, which she hyper-extended with 3:09 left. She was only in the game at that point because the bench players did not deliver. UT also suffered injuries to Angie Bjorklund, a broken nose, and Auguste, who aggravated the left biceps injury she incurred in practice last week. A win is a win, though, despite Alexis Rack logging a career-high 32 points off the bench for the Bulldogs.

It wasn't pretty -- games with Rutgers never are. Nonetheless, Nicky Anosike sank two free throws with 0.2 of a second left and No. 1 Tennessee nipped No. 5 Rutgers, 59-58. The losing team, of course, was flabbergasted and maintained that the "clock froze." Arena manager Tim Reese explained that Tennessee uses the Precision Timing Device similar to all major conferences. Reese said the game clock can only be stopped by the official, who blows his whistle and thus sends a wireless signal to the scorer's table to automatically stop the clock. Coach Summitt said, "I'm not sure how we managed to win. Statistically, what I was proud of, was that we were able to keep ourselves in the game, even though midway through the second half we were 1-of-15 from the floor. You're not going to win many games shooting that way unless you take care of the ball. We kept our turnovers down. Nicky Anosike struggled all night . . . And then she made both of those free throws. Rutgers did a tremendous job. They are so good off the dribble and in their halfcourt offense. Their shot selection was more impressive than ours was tonight." Coach Summitt felt the Lady Vols "got overanxious offensively. . . . We had players who were trying to do too much." Candace Parker, as usual, was sterling, scoring 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking 5 shots. Alexis Hornbuckle, who had 6 assists but only 3 points, commented, "We are going to get better . . . one day soon."

The Lady Vols' wheels have been wobbly for a while, but they finally came off in a 78-62 loss to 7th-ranked LSU in Knoxville. Even more disturbing than a 16 point loss at home to an SEC opponent was the fact that top-ranked Tennessee jumped out to a 21-2 lead to start the game -- no killer instinct in this team. Coach Summitt said, "Obviously, I’m very, very disappointed in this team. Make note, LSU played a terrific game. They came after us. We did some good things early. Bench play was pretty much non-existent. We can’t expect Candace [Parker] to carry us every night. We got exactly what we deserved. We didn’t defend, and we didn’t make shots. . . . We started well against Rutgers, too. Maybe the players can tell you what happened. We can’t win relying on just a couple of players. Our offense affected our defense. I’m not happy about it. It is unacceptable." Parker was the lone bright spot with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Alexis Hornbuckle offered, "I hope we can figure it out before it is too late. . . . We’ve got to regroup. Coach was upset and not happy. It is time for us to recover. We’ve got to have an open mind to criticism because it is going to come."

Behind Candace Parker's 23 points and 10 rebounds, the Lady Vols took the first step toward recovering from their LSU meltdown with an 81-68 victory over No. 25 Vanderbilt in Nashville. Tennessee started the game by outscoring Vandy 17-2, including 15 straight points, and shot 51.8% for the game, including 50% from behind the 3-point arc. Angie Bjorklund contributed 15 points for Tennessee, and Alex Fuller added 14. UT led 42-36 at the half despite foul trouble in the middle as Parker played only 11 minutes and Nicky Anosike was on the floor for seven. Alexis Hornbuckle contributed 6 steals to the cause. Coach Summitt said, "We did a lot of good things today. I think Candace and Angie shot the ball well today. Obviously, Alex came off the bench and gave us a huge lift. We did some really good things defensively. We had to play a lot more zone than we typically play. With the exception of giving up the three ball, I thought we did some good things out of it. . . . In particular, I thought we coughed the ball up way too much. A lot of those were us trying to do too much. I'm really proud of them. It's a huge win for us."

No. 3 Tennessee rolled to an 85-58 win over Alabama behind Candace Parker's 19 points. Prior to the game, it was revealed that Parker had decided to forego his last year of eligibility to pursue a WNBA and Olympic career. The Lady Vols started well and led by 21 points, 31-10, midway through the first half. Then with Parker and most of Tennessee's starters on the bench, the Crimson Tide went on a 17-7 run to cut UT's lead to 11 points. Coach Summitt sent the starters back in and Tennessee led by 20, 49-29, at halftime. Coach Summitt said, "I thought the first half we had some players come in a little over anxious offensively and not quite as committed on the defensive end, so we weren't scoring and we were obviously giving up points." The Lady Vols increased their lead in the second half as the bench played better, leading coach Summitt to remark, "Overall, I thought it was a good effort by our basketball team, a lot of energy. That's been a point of emphasis. We want to close out the regular season that way. We have three games left." Nicky Anosike tallied 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead UT's 43-30 board advantage. Vicki Baugh contributed 12 points and Alex Fuller added 10. Alexis Hornbuckle made five steals to pass Bridgette Gordon and become the Lady Vols' all-time steals leader with 335.

Candace Parker netted 19 points as the No. 3 Lady Vols warmed up after another slow start to beat Mississippi State 72-46. Parker blocked five shots, setting a new Tennessee career record with 247, surpassing Shelia Frost. Parker also dished out 5 assists, grabbed 8 rebounds, and made 4 steals. Shannon Bobbitt and Alexis Hornbuckle each contributed 11 points. Coach Summitt said, "In the second half, we were better than we were in the first. At halftime, I was not at all pleased. As a coaching staff, we think you can't take possessions off. You just can't do that. This team has to understand that they get every team's A game. Mississippi State played us tough at their place. Alberta [Auguste] did a great job off the bench. Vicki [Baugh] did some good things, and Alex [Fuller] did too. We expect our starters to be more effective and do a better job on the defensive end. They have to be more committed for 40 minutes."

On Senior Night, the Lady Vols said farewell to five players -- Candace Parker, Alexis Hornbuckle, Nicky Anosike, Shannon Bobbitt, and Alberta Auguste -- with an 88-61 victory over Florida. Coach Summitt said, "I was really pleased with the energy we played with tonight. We got off to a good start, but we gave up too many threes. I was pleased with our work on different defensive looks. Changing defenses has been a priority of late, and that will help us against Georgia and in the tournament. Obviously, I am proud of our seniors, but they are not finished yet. They have to focus on closing out the regular season and playing in the SEC Tournament. That should be a great environment. We have to take one game at a time." Parker and redshirt junior Alex Fuller led the scoring parade with 18 points each. Anosike netted 15, while frosh Angie Bjorklund and Vicki Baugh tallied 14 and 11, respectively. Anosike had 12 of the season-high 57 rebounds and Hornbuckle grabbed 10. Hornbuckle also contributed 8 of the season-high 27 assists, while Bobbitt added 7. Hornbuckle remarked, "It has been a great time. It has been a great journey and it is not over yet. We are a step closer to the end of the regular season and we need to be playing 40-minute games."

Candace Parker scored 30 points for the Lady Vols, including 13 in a row in the second half, and grabbed 9 rebounds as third-ranked Tennessee beat No. 22 Georgia, 72-63. UT trailed at the half for just the second time all season. Shannon Bobbitt had only 2 points at halftime but ended up with 15, and Alexis Hornbuckle scored 6 of her 8 points after halftime. Nicky Anosike kicked in 11 rebounds. Coach Summitt said, "We did a great job of getting Candace touches tonight. It was important for us to get points in the paint. She really established herself on the low block. We made it a point of emphasis to get her the ball. . . . All the guards knew at halftime they had to step it up. As poorly as we played in the first half, we were right there. I definitely challenged them to step up and be aggressive. I think athletically we had an advantage with our quickness. We didn't take advantage of that in the first half. We were passive. In the second half we went to a man, and that allowed us to be more aggressive." Georgia head coach Andy Landers said, "We did a lot of good things. We played hard; we played well. . . . It's sad that we continue to choose to do the wrong thing at the wrong time."
