EXHIBITION 1

The top-ranked Lady Vol basketball team lost to the USA National Team in their season-opening exhibition game, 83-72. Tennessee was led by Candace Parker's 22 points. Parker was held to just 4 points at halftime but got on track in the second half. A pair of freshman shooters, Angie Bjorklund and Sydney Smallbone, led the UT scoring in the first half, each contributing eight points. For the game Bjorklund finished with 13. The USA Team had beaten Maryland, 90-73, and UConn, 90-74, earlier in the week. Team USA was led by Diana Taurasi's game high 28 points. Lisa Leslie added 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the national team, Sue Bird had 11 points and Seimone Augustus added 10 points. Trailing 73-61 with 5:44 to go Tennessee went on a 9-0 run, in which Shannon Bobbitt hit a pair of three pointers, to cut the lead to three points, 73-70. It was the closest UT would get. Coach Summitt said, "I don't like to lose. It was not a moral victory. We lost. I'm proud how we battled. Where we were with three minutes to go is a testament to how hard we played. We'll go back to the drawing board. There were some possessions that we messed up. It could easily have been a different story." "Our board play has got to pick up," Summitt insisted. "We talked about this a year ago. We're talking about it the first exhibition game."

GAME 1

No. 1 ranked Tennessee won its eighth straight season-opener by defeating Chattanooga 76-56. After posting a scant four point lead at halftime, the Lady Vols broke the game open in the second half with suffocating defensive pressure that led to transition buckets. Candace Parker led UT with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 5 steals. Shannon Bobbitt also had 5 steals. Nicky Anosike contributed 10 boards and 9 points. Freshman Vicki Baugh finished with 11 points, and fellow frosh Angie Bjorklund had 8. Of Baugh, Coach Summitt said, "There's such a great upside to her game because you never have to coach effort with her." The Lady Vols owned a narrow rebound margin, 39-34 but took advantage of 32 Lady Moc turnovers for their 16th straight victory over their sister school from Chattanooga, despite UTC converting 8 of 22 three-point attempts.

GAME 2

The long-awaited matchup between 9th-ranked Oklahoma and No. 1 Tennessee, featuring their respective All-American stars, Courtney Paris and Candace Parker, lived up to its advance billing, but the smallest player on the court, UT's Shannon Bobbitt, made the biggest impact as Tennessee turned up the defensive heat in the final half-minute to pull out a 70-67 victory in Tampa, Florida. The Lady Vols' diminutive point guard knocked down 6-10 3-point shots on the way to recording a career-high 27 points. Oklahoma put a lot of effort into guarding Parker, who still managed 28 points and 15 rebounds, but Bobbitt made them pay for laying off her. "I just took what the defense gave me," Bobbitt said. "They definitely crowded Candace, and Candace did a great job of finding me. My teammates did a great job and I just had to knock down the shots." The rest of the Tennessee team managed only 5-23 shooting. Coach Summitt said, "We had to go with our veterans. Our freshmen played like freshmen, but that's OK. They're going to get better. With the schedule we have, they don't have any choice." In a losing cause, Courtney Paris tallied 21 points and 16 rebounds, for her umpteenth consecutive double-double. As Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale remarked, "It was a pretty good basketball game for the second week of the season."

GAME 3

On the day the top-ranked Lady Vols raised their 7th National Championship banner, they took down the No. 21 Longhorns from Texas, 92-67. Candace Parker netted 21 points, including Tennessee's first 11, and corralled 6 rebounds, while Alex Fuller had an almost perfect offensive game, going 7-8 from the floor, including 2-2 on 3-point shots, and 2-2 at the free throw line. Fuller finished with 18 points and four rebounds. The Lady Vols were dominant inside, grabbing steals and forcing turnovers. They scored 42 points in the paint and 40 points off turnovers and nabbed 18 steals. "The first half was our best defensive effort of the year by far," Coach Summitt said. Alexis Hornbuckle contributed 13 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. "Alexis' defense was terrific," Summitt said. "I thought she was the one player that just disrupted so much of what they wanted to do offensively." Frosh starter Angie Bjorklund tallied 16 points before fouling out with 7:50 left in the game. Texas never led and committed 30 turnovers. For the Longhorns, Brittainey Raven finished with 18 points, Kathleen Nash had 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Carla Cortijo added 12 points.

GAME 4

The top-ranked Lady Vols rolled to a 67-49 win over No. 16 West Virginia in Charleston, West Virginia, as Alexis Hornbuckle returned to the site where she won four state titles in high school. Candace Parker led the way for UT, scoring a season-high 29 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. In her homecoming game, Hornbuckle tallied 12 points, including her 1,000th career point, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. She joined Chamique Holdsclaw as the only other Lady Vol with at least 1,000 points, 550 rebounds, 375 assists and 275 steals for her career. Senior Nicky Anosike worked a highly effective high-low game with Parker early. Anosike, in the high post, repeatedly got the ball and fed Parker in stride for lay ups and open shots. For the game, Anosike contributed 10 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists and 2 blocked shots. "With Candace we wanted to work the high-low against the zone and I thought Nicky [Anosike] and Alex [Fuller] did a good job of getting the ball down to her," Coach Summit said. "You have to give her teammates a lot of credit. They are unselfish, they play well together and they understand the role she plays for our basketball team. It's very difficult to defend her and to do it you're going to have to double team and she does a great job of throwing out of double teams." Summitt concluded, "Obviously, I am really proud of the intensity that our basketball team played with tonight, on the defensive end and on the boards. I am always preaching that you have to pack your defense and board play every time that you play this game."

GAME 5

Traditional rival Louisiana Tech came calling to Thompson-Boling Arena and left holding the short end of an 81-60 score. The Lady Techsters ain't what they used to be. Tennessee's starters ran out out to a 48-20 lead in the first 15 minutes on 60% field-goal shooting, including 9-for-10 accuracy on 3-pointers. "If they're going to shoot 9-for-10 from 3, they'll beat anybody in the country," Tech coach Chris Long said. Meanwhile, in the paint, Nicky Anosike contributed 6-for-6 accuracy and 13 points. The starters soon gave way to the reserves, who held their own in the first half, extending UT's lead to as much as 33 points before halftime. The bench couldn't maintain the shooting pace in the second half, though, but logged valuable minutes of playing time, nonetheless. Coach Summitt said, "They have to understand their role of efficiency and being able to maybe do a better job of moving the basketball and, obviously, being able to knock down shots." Summitt wryly pondered freshman Vicki Baugh's 3-for-12 shooting accuracy and her team-high 16 rebounds. "I asked her how many of those were her own shots," Summitt said. "We'll have to count them on the tape." Baugh's potential was evident, though, demonstrated by 4 blocked shots and 4 assists alongside her rebounds. "The energy level she plays at, sometimes she's not always as efficient on the offensive end," Summitt said. "Once she settles down and doesn't rush shots, she's going to be much more efficient for us." While Tennessee was shooting well in the opening 20 minutes, Louisiana Tech struggled from the field, making only 9-of-34 first half field goals. Senior forward JoKeirra Sneed was a bright spot for the Lady Techsters. Sneed battled the much taller Lady Vol posts all night and ended with 15 points, a career-high 18 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocked shots.

GAME 6

No. 1 Tennessee welcomed No. 4 North Carolina to Thompson-Boling Arena, and the teams gave 16,845 fans a championship-calibre game that went down to the wire. Alexis Hornbuckle calmly converted 2 free throws with 13.8 seconds left to put UT up 81-78. UNC then brought the ball up for a 3-point heave by Rebecca Gray which went awry, apparently because she was fouled by Hornbuckle with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Gray hit the first free toss and missed her second, leading her to deliberately miss her third attempt. Unfortunately for the Heels, the intentional miss missed everything, which gave the ball to Tennessee out of bounds. The Lady Vols successfully inbounded the ball to Hornbuckle, who added one more layup to put the cap on an 83-79 victory. "I'm really pleased with our toughness down the stretch," coach Summitt said. Hornbuckle finished with 25 points, while Candace Parker contributed 21 points and 16 rebounds and Shannon Bobbitt added 10 points. Tennessee built double-digit leads in both halves, culminating in their biggest lead, 74-61, with 6:28 left, but Carolina never quit. UNC got 22 points from Erlana Larkins and 19 from Rashanda McCants. A huge 57-39 Tar Heel rebounding advantage was topped off by Larkins' 15 boards. North Carolina dominated in the paint, scoring 62 points under the basket and 28 second-chance points. Coach Summitt observed, "We had 13 offensive rebounds. When you're shooting 43 percent, you have to have more than that, . . . we have to have more people committed to rebounding."

GAME 7

Frosh Angie Bjorklund tallied 19 points and Candace Parker scored 14 as No. 1 Tennessee beat No. 24 Old Dominion, 83-51. Nicky Anosike added 13 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Vols, while Tiffany Green scored 14 points to lead the Lady Monarchs, who played without leading scorer T.J. Jordan. "I went in focused on defensive rebounding," Bjorklund said. "The offense just came." Bjorklund set career highs with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Tennessee had a 45-35 rebounding advantage, with every Lady Vol contributing at least one board. "After the last game, we had a statement to make: We can rebound," said frosh Vicki Baugh. "We have to start now. We're going to need it later." Baugh grabbed six rebounds herself but fouled out after only 9 minutes of action. On the other hand, every player contributed at least one turnover to the season-high total of 23. "We didn't start out with a good rhythm on offense," coach Summitt said. "We weren't playing well together. The ball got stuck in people's hands. We tried to force some high-low. Once we started reversing the ball, we opened up more options."

GAME 8

Returning to action after a break for final exams, the Lady Vols resumed their winning ways with an 84-61 victory over Middle Tennessee State. Tennessee was led by Candace Parker's 34 points, 17 of which came from the foul line, and 13 rebounds. Alexis Hornbuckle contributed 17 points, and Alex Fuller knocked down 16, coming off the bench, while grabbing 7 rebounds. The Lady Raiders got a sterling effort from Amber Holt, who posted 28 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. It was a foul-filled affair with UT going to the line 37 times, converting 28. MTSU coach Rick Insell said, "We're very aggressive; we do foul. Hey, they knocked down their free throws. They probably deserved more opportunities, to be honest." Tennessee posted a 47-26 rebounding advantage, and coach Summitt said, "We had a good effort. Considering the size advantage that we had, I would have been disappointed if we didn't have that advantage. From a defensive standpoint, we did better."

GAME 9

Lady Vol fans were treated to a sister act as Tennessee cruised past Gonzaga, 96-73. UT frosh Angie Bjorklund netted 23 points, including 7 threes, which ties Shanna Zolman's team record, while her sister Jami, a junior at Gonzaga, tallied 19 for the Bulldogs. Coach Summitt said, "I was interested to see what she [Angie] would do with the defensive assignment of guarding Jami. I asked the staff, 'Do you think this is a good idea?' I asked Angie, and she said it would be like playing at home. That tells me a lot about her emotional attitude. She was very composed. She shot extremely well. She had seven three-pointers and needed just one more for the school record. I put her back in the game to try to get the record. She had five looks. She told Jami that she needed one more three for the record, and Jami said, 'You're not going to touch the ball.' That's typical sisters." For Tennessee, Shannon Bobbitt, wearing seven stitches in her forehead from an encounter in the last game, dished out a career-high 13 assists, and Nicky Anoskie contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds.

GAME 10

A slow start made the game interesting but was not enough to derail the top-ranked Lady Vols as they visited Pauley Pavilion and came away with an 82-70 victory over the UCLA Bruins. "I don't think we brought the intensity," coach Summitt observed. "UCLA can spread you out and take you off the dribble. We didn't defend penetration and we didn't do a good job on the boards. We didn't have the energy. We regrouped at halftime. Probably one of the biggest adjustments was to go inside, get paint points." California native Vicki Baugh had a big night going off the bench until she took a hard blow to the nose with 14:15 left in the game and was unable to continue. Coach Summitt said, "She did a lot of good things for us." The frosh scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting, grabbed 5 rebounds, and made 2 steals in her 13 minutes of action. Candace Parker led UT with 17 points, while Shannon Bobbitt tallied 16 points, hitting 3-4 three-pointers, and Alexis Hornbuckle contributed 12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
